In my head (neurotic mix)

Description
Rearranged a version I wrote a few months ago. I'm struggling with the piano a bit in the mix — Through speakers, it sounds like it's under water. Sounds more accurate through headphones. Anyone have any ideas?

Lovely!
First, lovely song! Love the mood, textures, and changes.

If the piano sounds different on different speakers it might be a phase issue, which could be due to a laggy bus send or stereo effect. Try soloing that track and its busses with a phase meter on the master output to check the phase alignment. If it's shifting out of phase you might need to mono the initial input or use a different approach to create stereo width.

Hi Chikoppi!
First, SO AWESOME TO HEAR FROM YOU! I hope all has been well in your world. Thanks for this. I wish I knew how to check phase alignment. I did remove all channel strip settings and all effects, and still sounds underwater. I also changed the software instruments to a few different pianos. No change. It's strange, though, that to me it sounds accurate through headphones. This is where my lack of mastering skills starts to frustrate me.

In my head
Very nice piece. Thank you. It "flows" wonderfully and has a calming effect on me. I'm guessing the piano has EQ, a compressor and reverb (at least). I found compressors make a big difference to how instruments sound and "ring". Perhaps try a few other compressors (or change the attack and release settings) to see if that make any difference? The underwater feel could possibly be caused by some low end "mud" so perhaps try rolling that off? It could be worth creating a duplicate of the piano track and making changes one, at a time, and then A/B ing? Anyway, I hope you sort it out. Take care.

Hi Peter!
Great to hear from you! Ok, so this is something I should double check. I thought I had removed every channel strip setting and turned off all effects, but maybe there's some EQing happening on just that instrument? This is super helpful and I appreciate the ideas!

very nice
I don't think you're a nobody in Huston, you've got talent and soul. I don't understand the technical comments from the others, I'm new to this, so I can't help on that score.

By the way, though I don't know the sound you are aiming for, the piano sounds good on my speakers!

Thanks for this link, dude. And I'm sort of dumbfounded that it sounds okay for other folks. Maybe it is my system!

Sweet
Nice as always from you. Quite soothing as opposed to what the title and the picture try to tell me...

Quick fix: Listen through headphones ;-)

Thanks and take care,
Henke

the mix
works in my head in headphones. I'll have to give it another listen on speakers. Overall, it worked for me.
