Description
I gave up on Facebook a while back and now dip into Twitter to follow the anti-Brexit movement.

Andrew Parnall @dontbrexitfixit has been tirelessly tweeting on the Stop Brexit ticket since the referendum in 2016. He wrote the words for a song and put them on Twitter looking for someone to put them to music and I picked them up and adapted one of our old punk songs.

And if anyone is interested the original (VERY SWEARY) version is HERE

TOLD YOU SO ( © Parnall/Langford/Hobbs 2018)

Told you so, you know I told you so
You should've listened but oh no
You had your vote, said that's enough
Even though it's clear
They cheated and they broke the law, won the day and shut the door
And even then they didn't know where we go from here

Now we're screwed and I mean you and me
They're OK 'cos they've all gone you see
Laughing at your gullibility
Laughing at our stupid apathy

It gets worse, another verse
This goes on and on and on
Fifty stinking years of hurt
But at least we wrote a song
You can hum it in the food bank line,
Beat it on a drum, let's start
I really wish I'd listened
I wish I'd played my part

There are no sunny uplands to be seen
The unicorns are tasting of chlorine ,
All because you bought into a dream
Of a slimy toff from Eton with a scheme

If you could rent a Time machine
You could have stockpiled more,
Bought a gun and padlocks for the door
Or you could have spent some dosh and bought your self a boat

but why mess around with that, let's have a peoples vote.

New take
Great rocking guitars!

Remind me again - why did people vote for Brexit?

(You don't actually have to answer that.)

Your voice sounds great.

Told You So
Powerful in every respect. Just love that guitar solo! I blame wealth inequality for waking people up - the shame of it is that when they woke up they voted in people who confirmed their prejudices, but in fact then went about making things worse for them. Things will be OK when you and I take over, Dick.

Thanks Philip
I look forward to the day we run the world.

Wealth inequality was I think one of the driving factors and persuading poor people that the EU was causing their problems. Unfortunately it will be too late once they find out the truth although I still expect they'll blame it on the EU anyway.

You and me both Cees
There is nothing good that will come out of this and it worries me that it is part of an overall plan by an authoritarian right wing. Putin, Trump, Brexit and the rise of "populism". It doesn't bode well for any of our futures.

Thanks for the listen and comments!

Kind of like Taxmen in spots
Really nice guitar work and singing but I don't care for blatant political songs on these sites and the same old partisan comment banter they evoke. oooh, we are all involved now. But I see that there is actually a category for those songs, so I will know better next time. Will check out some of your other stuff though.

Politics are unavoidable
I don't write love songs but not all my songs are as uncompromising as this. My anger runs deep and I cannot stay silent when I see wrongdoing.

Many thanks for listening and commenting though and it will be interesting to see what you think of my other songs.

Nicely done
I'm not European, so I don't feel the "Brexit" issue like you do, but I find myself wondering, “why did Europe allow the EU expand to become such a multi-headed monster, given that it first started out as a simple trade union?”   It could have succeeded admirably if it had just stuck to its roots.   Now, I don’t see how the Union will survive, being “oxen unequally yoked together.”

Anyway – nice song, nicely done.

It's not a monster
that's the kind of narrative pushed by Putin and the far right that led to this situation.

The EU is far from perfect but it works well and we will be much poorer economically, socially and politically if we leave. People'\s anger should be directed at governments not the EU.

Thanks for the listen and comments though!

Cheers

Dick

I just think they tried to go too far, too fast
We shall see, but I just think that the organizers of the EU tried to go too far, too fast.   They expanded the scope and concept of the whole thing to create a “para-government” that was akin to a “United States of Europe, with its capitol in Brussels, DC.”   They didn’t pay enough attention to the culture of these many places, which they eagerly called “states.”     Homogenized milk is not always a good thing.   In hindsight, it probably would have been much better to start small and to introduce new ideas – and members – over a much longer stretch of time.

Now that people seem to be rebelling against what it has become, it will be very difficult to make it smaller and less-intrusive.   It may be impossible to go back.   A lot of good advancements might now be caught in the backlash, and this probably could have been avoided with a more deliberate and cautious approach to what began as a good idea.

Yes, you're right Mike
The EU has grown too big.

It's grown too big for Putin and Trump and they would dearly love to see it destroyed.

It's grown too big for the extreme nationalists who would close borders and expel immigrants.

It's grown too big for the left wing zealots who want to bring down the neo-liberal elite and replace it with a social;list utopia.

Many people aren't even aware of the benefits the EU brings and blame their problems not on their governments but on immigrants and blame the EU for the immigrants. It's a carefully constructed right wing narrative by those who want to destroy the EU.

For me it's allowed me to travel round Europe with no visas, no international driving licence. I get treated for free in hospitals across the EU due to reciprical arrangements and if I moved to the EU my state pension would still be paid and would increase with inflation. Outside the EU that's not always the case.

I've gigged in France with nothing more than a ferry ticket needed. If we leave the EU that will be finished and the cost and complication of getting the necessary paperwork and insurances will make it much more difficult and likley to put off smaller bands from European tours. The UK is already making it difficult for performers from outside the EU to get visas to play here. Peter Gabriel says that Woman may not even happen next year as performers are finding it too expensive and complicated to come here and that will start to apply to artists from the EU. Already some orchestras are losing musicians because EU nationals no longer want to be in this country and they are unsure of their status after we leave.

I could go on and on about the benefits but I'm getting sick of trying to explain all the benefits we get from being in the EU. What I can't do if give you even one tangible benefit of being outside the EU.

It has not grown too much or too fast. It is not an unelected cabal of bureaucrats and we are going to be poorer in every way if we leave.

In the end when the likes of Steve Bannan , Farage, Putin, Trump, brain dead racists and xenophobes and far left extremists want to bring down the EU and most academics, scientists, environmentalists, economists, trade union and business leaders want to support and improve the EU I know which side of the barricade I'll be on.

Great stuff

You know my thoughts on Brexit, so I don't have to say much, but I will say shame on those who, through a campaign of lies, misinformation and scaremongering, managed to persuade enough gullible people to vote leave. And who also resorted to cheating just in case. Simply disgraceful and in no way a true reflection on what the majority think. Unscrupulous is an understatement; most certainly not democratic.

I love the line: "Of a slimy toff from Eton with a scheme"!! I wonder who that refers to? ;-)

Let's hope we don't ever have to eat chlorinated unicorn, amongst other things. I don't think I'd like that.

Great political statement anyway, once again.

There's quite a choice isn't there? ;)

Thanks a lot Dave.

The benefits of Brexit have been likened to unicorns (fantastic but nonexistent). Another "benefit" is that we can import chlorine washed chicken from the USA (EU rules do not allow it)

Politics is insane and will drag you in if you're not careful.

It certainly is
and there seems no end in sight for the damage it's already done and will continue to do :(

Sex Pistols is probably right. It's a riff I used on a song 38 years ago in a post-punk band I played in with Graeme.

Thanks for the comment about the solo. A one-off and I'm not sure I could play it again!
