Description
Songwriting can be such a funny thing. I’m not sure when the line “Poor Richard’s back in town” popped into my head (I think it happened when I was walking home after going out for morning coffee), but it seemed like a meaty lyrical concept to chew on and so I tried it out with a little chord sequence on guitar and it worked - and I was off and munching. Over two months it went through numerous small changes as lyrics and guitar riffs came and went. In this version, the fourth stab at recording it, I extended some of the passages between the sung verses to add musical texture (in lieu of taking a distinct guitar break) and tried to vary the timing of the rhythm here and there to diversify the structure. Some of these elements are more successful than others. Perhaps this thing will always be a work-in-process. For now, this is it : )

Lyrics
POOR RICHARD

I know that he’s your brother
And you want me to cut him some slack
But too many strange things have been happening
Ever since he’s come back
Poor Richard’s back in town

The clerk at the dollar store
Claims there’s been a swindle
Some jewelry has been burglarized
The thief came in thru the bathroom window
Poor Richard’s back in town

A rumor is going around
About some creepy peeping Tom
The library’s public computers
Have been downloading internet porn
Poor Richard’s back in town

Candlesticks are missing
From the Roman Catholic Church
The poor box got knocked off
And the police have started a search
Poor Richard’s back in town

On a wall in City Hall
new graffiti on a toilet tile
The mayor has been accused of being
a gerrymandering pedophile
Poor Richard’s back in town

I know you want to believe him
But his excuses are so lame
Just because he’s your younger brother
Doesn’t mean you are to blame
Poor Richard’s back in town

Love it
As eccentric as The Who or The Kinks, but all Warren. The guitar stabs are at once amusing and dramatic. You have a unique voice, my friend.

Power chords
Those British Invasion power chords have staying power.

It's nice to be thought of as having a unique voice - now if that voice could actually sing : )

this is pretty great
it has a nice thick sound that I like - or it's the humidity. Either way - good song.

Most groovy song
This is almost like Fairport Convention with Mike Bloomfield on guitar, as far as the music part goes. The arrangement reminds me of those old Bob Dylan songs. Not a lot of songs these days about peeping toms. porn and pedophiles.

No control
This is my final stab at laying it down. There are parts of it I'd like to rethink, but it seems to have a mind of its own.

Nice performance, and disturbingly apropos
Yes, this is a very nice arrangement and performance – and, the lyrics are “curiously apropos” in the political situations that seem to be bubbling all around the world these days.   Guilt-by-association and all of that.

When the apparent becomes transparent
Well, we are living through disturbing times. Or maybe more transparent times? Thanks for the comment.

One of your Best!
Loved it Warren! Everything is there. Great lyrics, wonderful phrasing, and man those riffs are so entertaining, innovative and just cool. You have more originality in those lead lines than I have heard in many a moon. Just terrific. Way to go Warren!!

When a bad thing is good
Ha ha hah - if this is one of my best, then it means I've got lots of room for improvement! I've tried to muscle this thing into existence several times, but it keeps morphing in strange ways. I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn't feel like I have made a definitive arrangement.
