The Band Were Playing Ukuleles

Description
When Teresa May announced plans for a "Brexit Festival" I was really pleased as I had already started a song along the same lines.

A lot of things have been promised but none of them are likely to happen and this is our take on it.

I'm loving the studio horns btw!

Starts quiet and gets messy.

AIF version https://amokopera.bandcamp.com/track/the-phobias-the-band-were-playing-ukuleles

Lyrics :Dick Langford and Richard Marris

Music: Dick

The band were playing ukuleles
And the only thing to drink was Bailey's
The crowd were in an angry mood
They were promised music, beer and food

They promised there would be a gig
They said it would be really big
Bigger than we'd seen before
Don't expect a big encore

Promises, promises so easy to make
Promises, promises easier to break
Promises, promises, surely not lies
Promises, promises oh what a surprise

But this band can't write a song
Creating things just takes too long
Screeching feedback then a fight
Scuffling for the spotlight

They said that it would be a hit show
But really it was just a shit show
They're good at playing silver spoons
Just a rattle not a tune

Too much noise to hear what they're saying
Fighting over the mic when they should be playing
Nothing's going, but no-one's staying
They're not performing but you're paying

When the cans and bottles fly
Run and hide or stand and lie
Nothing to do so please be seated
Have you ever felt like you've been cheated?

I replied to this a couple of days ago but it's one of the lost comments!

I think it will be very messy and I can't say I'm looking forward to it.

I really appreciate the listen and comments!

Great intro, very 70's in a great way, and corking guitar. Posting before gremlins set in.

I tried posting on your song (amongst others)
and each time the comment never even got to the page.

Thanks for stopping by Graham.

Funny you should say 70s as it reminded me of a song from that period when I was playing it and I still can't remember what it was! Probably Lindisfarne or some such band.

Cheers

Love the way you build the arrangement. Ah, promises easy to make; easy to break. That resonates. Good luck with Brexit - it seems a few are starting to realise that it won't mean all the foreigners will go home and the Brits will get their jobs back and the standard of living will rise as a result. Anyway, I like the song a lot, both the lyrics and the music.

I have to say I had a lot of fun with this. How I work sometimes is to play all the way through and then cull most of what I played leaving a bit more in each verse as I work through.

Some are starting to realise there are no sunny uplands or unicorns but a worrying number simply don't care as long they are out of something they don't really understand and probably gave little thought to before they were told it was evil. Such is the way of the world...

Thanks for the listen and comments. Much appreciated.

Cheers

Much appreciated Charlie!
I rarely find a song where I can use it. I had in mind the opening scene from Paris Texas, except instead of a windswept desert it was a godforsaken field somewhere in England. Pissing with rain, freezing cold and up on the stage the band were playing ukuleles.

I have to say
I didn't know the song so had to have a listen. Great song and video so thanks for the heads up.

I don't quite hear the similarities (except for the slide) but it's nice to get a comparison like that!

Thanks for listen and comments Don.

Very nice. I like the way it builds. The production is very good. "Screeching feedback then a fight" sounds so much like US politics these days. I guess it is global. I like the song and the message.

Sounds very Appalachian
The arrangement is great, the way the percussion changes at the right times. This song has a vision. The brass section is an excellent touch. very good man.

I guess the intro does. I think at the time I was channeling early 70s British folk bands like Lindisfarne or Strawbs but I'm happy with Appalachian!

I recommend trying the Studio Horns!

I am actually from Kentucky. So I mean it as a total compliment. And all that Appalachian stuff is traced back to the folk music of Ireland and the British Islands. But right, it has a heavy 60's psychedelic feel in a way. But it seems more serious. I know you do a lot of political type songs, which I am not keen on, like those old folky protest songs. Never got into that. But in this song the message is more nuanced. Metaphorical maybe. Making it more universal. But at the same time rousing.

Deconstruction Period
I like your take on this, Dick. A nice build allows for the sense of travesty to swell as the piece progresses, much like the reality.

A shit show, indeed. I keep hoping the cosmic event that swept us into this alternate reality will sweep us back into the semi-sane reality from whence we came. ;)

Without a doubt
I used to like the idea of alternate realities but now I realise it depends on the reality one actually ends up in!
