Description
Blimey, you wait for months for a song and then two come along a few days apart!

Not the Zappa song but ....

Another song inspired by Richard's Route 66 trip.

In short, the story goes that in 1964 Zappa was asked by an undercover police officer to make a porn film. He refused but said he could do a soundtrack. He was booked on suspicion of conspiracy to manufacture pornographic materials and suspicion of sex perversion.

Full story HERE

Richard: Lyrics, melody, all guitars, vocals.
Dick: Production and stuff.

AIF version HERE

Cucamonga ⓒ 2018 Richard Marris

A sci-fi movie
Or something groovy
A peaceful little plan
Turned into Bongo
How could it wrong go
In a trap set by the man

Bernardino
A squalid scene-o
Sweat your ass off in a cell
Bongo Fury
Convince that jury
Not to send you down to hell

You’ll get no credit in this straight world
Better not to try
Do your time
Start to climb
Tune in, freak out and fly

Don’t you Dare
Wear Long Hair
In this quiet desert town
We’ll make up some shit
Charge you with it
Then we’ll Send you down

Cucamonga
What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Now Frank can’t stand the man no more
Cucaraca
They’re gonna catch ya
Grind you right into the floor

One second in
I loved it. Lots of Zappa - isms to keep me happy. Makes me want to do something along similar lines, but I'm not sure I dare.

Happy to learn you're a Frank fan, Dick. I saw him in Stafford, and he wasn't happy, but the gig was great anyway. His son Dweezil was awesome in Wolverhampton a few years ago, too.

Thanks Graham
This is mostly Richard. He had the idea, wrote the song, sang, and played guitars. He said he wanted a 60s vibe and that choppy guitar and bass seemed to fit the bill.

I'm a bit marmite with Zappa. I think he's a brilliant writer, arranger and player but sometimes he's just too tricksy and I struggle with listening. Having said that, I spent an inordinate amount of time in my teenage years enjoying the early albums like We're Only in It for the Money and Hot Rats. Go figure ;)

Thanks for the listen and the comments.

Cheers

Dick

Thanks Cees!
Not the Zappa song you may have expected but I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

That's all Richard on the guitars.

Thanks for the listen and comment.

Richard's idea.
I had no idea any of this happened but Richard turned it into song.

Many thanks for the listen and comment.

wow dick....this is fantastic.....very indie punk. love it. the production is amazing...sounds like every space is filled with just enough to make it comfy from beginning to end.....and i mean 'comfy' in a good way (how can comfy not be good??)
this is definitely my favourite DWL track of all time.

Thanks Julian, high praise
Comfy? That's a nice turn of phrase.

I can't really take much credit for this one. Richard wrote it, played guitars and sang. I just pissed around with the other stuff but somehow it all worked.

Hope all is well in Deal.

Cheers

Dick

This is really cool
I love the production - the kick in the face drum front and center and the off kilter phrasing - and the horns - the horns are excellent! Well done.

Finding the right drums
proved quite difficult. After some experimentation we used one of the Logic drummers.

Yes, the Studio Horns work really well for this sort of backing. I haven't been able to get good results using them as single line or faster melodic work but I'm still learning about them.

I like "off-kilter" :)

Thanks Kevin.

Hi Dick
I like the construction of this and the horns sound great. Personally I found the guitar a bit too low in the mix..in comparison to other instruments and take away some of the energy in it'
Just my thoughts.
Have you seen the youtube clip of a young Zappa playing the bicycle on the Steve Allen show?
All the best B

Hello stranger!
Nice to see you again and thanks for the comments.

Getting the balance right here was very difficult as the guitar is very busy.

I hadn't seen the video but just did. Blimey that was weird, and on national TV?

Incredible.

Very interesting stuff
I always tried to like Frank Zappa but never could get too much into what he was doing though i still own a few things. Too many changes for me :( but this song I like. It is very kinetic and evokes a flashback or two.

Too many changes
Ha, that's what I've often thought about Zappa.

I really liked his early albums but he could be somewhat tricksy. A brilliant writer and performer though even if I never got on with it too well.

Flashback is good as we wanted a sort of loose 60s vibe.

Thanks for the listen and comments Bill, much appreciated.

Cheers
