Lyrics
The Devilish Stranger

Once I walked down Sherbrook Valley
To view the scene and to take the air
I came upon a devilish stranger
Tall and grim, and standing there

Hie ye home, you devilish stranger
Tall and grim in your dark cloak.
You will fight and rob and steal
From honest Stafford folk.

CHORUS Get you gone, you devilish stranger
We'll have none of your kind here
Get you gone you devilish stranger
You will do for us, I fear

And then up spoke this devilish stranger
I can neither thieve nor fight
For I am worn, and wet, and weary
Having walked all through the night

CHORUS

And as I looked on seven springs
I saw us both reflected there
I was reminded of my brother
And I recalled the stranger's prayer

O, don't you fear the devilish stranger
For I will neither thieve nor fight
For I am worn, and wet and weary
And I'm in need of succour this night

BRIDGE

O, don't you fear the devilish stranger
For I will neither thieve nor fight
For I am worn, and wet and weary
And I'm in need of succour this night

CHORUS Welcome home, you devilish stranger
Hail, friend won't you be of good cheer.
Welcome home, you devilish stranger
You're home with us all right here.

Inspired by Nic
I saw Nic lots of times in the 70's and 80's. He's up there with Martin Carthy and Bert Jansch. Thanks for the kind words, KC.

English Folk
Add a bit of Sugar Magnolia to the basic english folk form and puff, with the secret Grah3am sauce and viola, pop magic. Thank you for posting here. The bar stays high because of your efforts.

Merlot, the secret sauce
Thank you for the wonderful compliment. I've learned a lot since I joined this site. I wish others were able to do so. It's a good place.

Devilish Stranger
I like the style of this - I get a bit of Steeleye Span in it. Good message in the lyrics. Much enjoyed!

No Surprise there
Fairport and Steeleye were favourites of mine. But Nic Jones - there's a rare talent. Thank you for your time, Philip.

Exquisite!
Love this. Like you Graham, I am a long time Fairport & Steeleye fan, so this really hits home with me.

Guitar and vox are both excellent!

Be well friend!

Thank you, Michael
A fellow Staffordian, Mike Raven, taught me a lot about alternative tunings in a book featuring lots of Nic Jones and Martin Carthy songs. This one is simply drop D, but I also like DADEAE, which I haven't used for a long time. (Time I did!)
