Run From The Fire (1982 Track 2 - 2019 RPM Challenge)

Description
This is the second song from my 2019 RPM Challenge. I decided to do an early 80s synth pop homage for this year's challenge, which was a lot of fun to put together. I even had fun making the artwork for the project. The idea was, it's 1982 and you're in your favorite mall browsing Camelot Music or Sam Goody and there it is in all it's XDR cassette goodness.

While it's all synth (no guitars), I did jump around a little stylistically and maybe borrowed some sounds and styles from a little later than 1982. But, I've reached the point in my life where the music of my youth has all blurred together, so it's at least authentic to my hazy memories.

As for the title of the project, 1982 was a big year for me. I turned 15, was a freshman in high school and got my driver's license. All big deals when you're growing up.

This tune was one of those that just are together in just a very short period of the time. I thought up the chorus one morning in the shower. Wrote it down and the lyrics flowed. When I started on the music, I was trying different synth bass sounds and the bass line came from that.

This is the obligatory 1980s song about politics and nuclear war. More specifically, being a teenager during that time and wondering every night before you went to sleep if you were going to wake up to mushroom clouds the next day. Fun times.

Run From The Fire
©2018 Joseph Gurner

Nighttime falls
you look into the fire
eyes full of wonder
heart full of fear

Morning comes
you’re in the world again
can’t bring your dreams into the light
wishes fade away

Run from the fire
run from the flame
hidden desires
who is to blame

The man in the pulpit
the man on TV
the man on the radio
why can’t I believe

People laugh
but you hear the lies
head is full of sorrow
stars are in your eyes

Can’t you cry
can’t you turn your head
all your nightmares come to life
and keep you company

Run from the fire
run from the flame
hidden desires
who is to blame

The man in the pulpit
the man on TV
the man on the radio
sound just like me
