February (1982 Track 3 - 2019 RPM Challenge)

Description
This is the third song from my 2019 RPM Challenge submission. I decided to do an early 80s synth pop homage for this year's challenge, which was a lot of fun to put together. I even had fun making the artwork for the project. The idea was, it's 1982 and you're in your favorite mall browsing Camelot Music or Sam Goody and there it is in all it's XDR cassette goodness.

While it's all synth (no guitars), I did jump around a little stylistically and maybe borrowed some sounds and styles from a little later than 1982. But, I've reached the point in my life where the music of my youth has all blurred together, so it's at least authentic to my hazy memories.

As for the title of the project, 1982 was a big year for me. I turned 15, was a freshman in high school and got my driver's license. All big deals when you're growing up.

February has always been my least favorite month. It's usually dismal and cold, even in Mississippi and this year we had record setting rains and flooding. But, more than that, February, for most of my life, seems to be the month of loss. Lost jobs, ended relationships, deaths of friends and family. Way more so than any other month.

That's what this tune os about. Cheerful, huh?

Fun facts: When I originally wrote the lyrics, I stole the chord progression, more or less, from an Elvis Costello song, then, when I started recording vocals, I completely rewrote the lyrics. It's actually much less morose than before.

Lyrics
I walk along these lonely streets
and feel the winds of February
Sorrow cuts right through me
like the nighttime chill

The pain I feel so deep inside
numbs me like the cold
as I wander through this world
so full of goodbyes

How do I go on
and face the winds of February
lost and so alone
trying to find my way

How do I move on
through the winds of February
when faces I have known
fade into the night

Cold rain falls
mixing with my tears
drown the world around me
as I say goodbye again

How do I go on
and face the winds of February
lost and so alone
trying to find my way

How do I move on
through the winds of February
when faces I have known
fade into the night

I walk along these lonely streets
and face the winds of February
