Why Can't She Be Mine? (1982 Track 6 - 2019 RPM Challenge)

Get Flash to see this player.

This is the sixth track from my 2019 RPM Challenge entry. On more than one occasion back in the good old days, I remember hearing a song from a new band on the radio and deciding to get the album, only to discover that none of the other songs sound like the single on the charts. Maybe someone else actually wrote the tune, different producers were brought in to "punch up" a song to make it more commercial or it's an obscure 60s song the record company decided the band needed to cover, it always seemed kind of a weird thing to do and the band usually seemed to suffer from it.

That's what I decided to do with this track. It's the obligatory more radio friendly, engineered to be the band's one hit, track. Similar to the rest of the album, but just different enough in style to make it sound a little out of place.

For the 2019 RPM Challenge I decided to do an early 80s synth pop homage for this year's challenge, which was a lot of fun to put together. I even had fun making the artwork for the project. The idea was, it's 1982 and you're in your favorite mall browsing Camelot Music or Sam Goody and there it is in all it's XDR cassette goodness.

While it's all synth (no guitars), I did jump around a little stylistically and maybe borrowed some sounds and styles from a little later than 1982. But, I've reached the point in my life where the music of my youth has all blurred together, so it's at least authentic to my hazy memories.

As for the title of the project, 1982 was a big year for me. I turned 15, was a freshman in high school and got my driver's license. All big deals when you're growing up.

You know it’s not a mystery
cause girl we have a history
I want to take you back again
just pretend it didn’t end

I cried the day you walked away
but I know you wouldn’t stay
the grass was greener over there
but I’ll get you back I swear

Why can’t she be mine?
Why can’t she be mine?
Why can’t she be mine?
Why can’t she be mine?

Is it cause the clothes I wear
is it how I cut my hair
what do you not see in me
someone else that I should be

Maybe I’m not rich enough
or maybe i’m just not so tough
but I’ll get you back one day
and I know you will stay

Why can’t she be mine?
Why can’t she be mine?
Why can’t she be mine?
Why can’t she be mine?

Girl I know it’s crazy
but I want you back in my life again
It’s gettin’ kinda hazy
why you walked away

Come on let me show you
what I really feel in my heart again
there’s no one else to go to
cause you know I am you man

Why can’t she be mine?
Why can’t she be mine?
Why can’t she be mine?
Why can’t she be mine?
