Mirror Mask (1982 Track 8 - 2019 RPM Chalenge)

Description
This song is basically a 1980s movie. Two people, probably in New York, who live inside a shell that isn't really who they are and, because of the time, place and surroundings, they can never really take off their masks - even with each other. Maybe Starring Robert Downy Jr. and Ally Sheedy or James Spader and Jennifer Connelly.

I also totally stole the title and some of the ideas from Neil Gaiman.

For this year's RMP Challenge, I decided to do an early 80s synth pop homage for this year's challenge, which was a lot of fun to put together. I even had fun making the artwork for the project. The idea was, it's 1982 and you're in your favorite mall browsing Camelot Music or Sam Goody and there it is in all it's XDR cassette goodness.

While it's all synth (no guitars), I did jump around a little stylistically and maybe borrowed some sounds and styles from a little later than 1982. But, I've reached the point in my life where the music of my youth has all blurred together, so it's at least authentic to my hazy memories.

As for the title of the project, 1982 was a big year for me. I turned 15, was a freshman in high school and got my driver's license. All big deals when you're growing up.

Lyrics
Mirror Mask
©2019 Joseph Gurner

Joanie looks into the mirror
hiding pain behind her eyes
her mouth starts to quiver
and stops her tears from rolling down

She puts on her pretty face
to show the world outside
leaving all her fear and doubt
behind a closed door

Her Mirror Mask smiles when you see her
and laughs when she says hello
Can’t see behind the reflection
The only place she can hide

Johnny smiles into the camera
with a practiced look that hides his fear
his legs start to quiver
as they long to run far away

He practices his little laugh
that puts his whole world at ease
but covers his fear and doubt
behind a closed door

His Mirror Mask smiles when he sees you
and laughs when he says hello
Can’t see behind the reflection
the only place he can hide

Across the crowded room
Joanine and Jonny see each other’s eyes
she sees behind his mask
he catches his breath and looks away

Johnny walks closer
the Mirror Masks start’s to fade
he brushes her hair away
and looks inside

Their Mirror Mask smile when they see you
and laugh when they say hello
Can’t see behind the reflection
the only place they can hide
