Description
A harrowing slice of Americana!

I found this old traditional on Roger's McGuinn's FOLK DEN site. He has a simple acoustic version there. When I first heard it I thought it was too powerful a tune not to be ROCKED. (Go figure!) ... So I got to work.

:-)

It was apparently written not long after the events it recounts---post 1791---which would place it in the late 18th century; the early 19th century at the latest. (Classic Americana indeed!)

It always tears me up to listen to this; my ancestry being both Celtic and Iroquois.

The original mix was posted back in 2006 I think. I have thoroughly remixed it, and corrected a couple of mistakes.

It sports what just might be my best vocals ever. You be the judge.

(For FETER, wherever you are my friend!)

Dam this is inspiring. Thanks for posting your songs. The mix is a bit too wolfy but the subject matter probably gets ya a pass.
The production works pushes the song into a new genre. The organ break works as an interlude and opens into a sixties guitar solo. You think of that yourself?
Great work Mike!

"wolfy"?
I dunno what that means! As for the details of the arrangement... yeah... it's all me.

Glad you found it inspiring Daug!

Thanks KC!
I've only done a couple of tunes like this over the years. They push the boundaries of my skill set a bit, but I do enjoy the challenge.

They still write songs like this in Canada
where folk lives and breathes. And will bite your ankles. Yes, great vocals.

O Canada...
Just so ya know, I'm a fan of SPIRIT OF THE WEST and CAPTAIN TRACTOR. Both Canadian bands.

Still have the bite marks!

Just listened at "proper' levels
it's a masterpiece Mike. Brilliantly sung and arranged.

Very fine guitar work indeed.

While I was listening I read this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Clair%27s_Defeat

Wow! That's some story and the lyrics certainly reflect the battle.

Cheers

Dick

Far as I know, I'm the only person who has ever rocked this old trad tune.

Many thanks to Roger McGuinn for bringing it to our attention!

Wow!
I love this style of song - Roger has a stack of them at his Folk Den. "Cardiff Rose" is one of my favourites there - ir also reminds me of "the Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" - a guarranteed tear jerker for me. Also hearing hints of Fairport Convention, Lindisfarne and other English/Scottish folk rock bands - all very good news.
Your playing/singing/arrangement and production are all very classy - the best of yours that I can recall.
An excellent post Mike - congratulations!
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Hello Mr. Porter!
I do listen to a lot of English and Celtic style folk tunes. I've long been a Fairport fan. In fact, I was deliberately attempting a fusion of "Red & Gold" era Fairport and "Broadsword" era Jethro Tull on this one.

Many thanks for clocking in Neil. I really appreciate it!

Hey Michael
Thanks for the props on the vox. I'm seldom pleased with my singing voice. This is one of the few times I feel I came close to getting it right.
