Description
Nearly 50 years ago (blimey!) when I was taking my first few tentative guitar steps I fell in with some folks in Basildon, where I lived at the time.

We'd have jams and talk endlessly about music.

One of them, Pete Kearney, was an Australian, a little older than me and could actually play, sing and write. In fact, he made a living from it https://www.peterkearneysongs.com.au and still performs regularly in Australia.

He returned to Oz sometime back and we lost touch. A few years ago, through the wonder of Facebook, we made contact again.

After many emails backwards and forwards I said I'd like to try and work on one of his songs. The result is what you hear here.

Pete sings and plays guitar.

Words and music © 1968 by Peter Kearney. From his Early Songs collection. Arranged and produced by me.

Lyrics
1. Softly stirs the ancient wind, softly comes the song.
Now it rises now it falls – a weary weary song.
Spent from every earthen lip and mouth of sallow clay
From every silent room.
Ancient tales and ancient songs come gather me around.

2. Hear it lift upon the wind, a dry and dusty wind.
See the words of centuries written in the sands
In the dust that creeps around the buildings once so new
And now they crumble.
Ancient tales and ancient songs and buildings once so new.

3. Who had walked these streets before?
Who put down these stones?
Did they give their lives for this? Did they die unhappy men?
See a flower pressed and dry in pages writ by men
who thought to change the world.
Now they’re gone, they cannot see the fruits of all their toil.
Ancient tales and ancient songs and flowers pressed between.

The song
is from 1968 so that would explain some of it!

I didn't consciously set out to get a 60s vibe but if that's how it sounds then great!

Thanks for the listen and comments

Commercial Delights
Has a B. Ives vibe, like from his folk song collections, the arrangement is punctual and does not get in the way of the material so we could date the approach to June or July '67? That's good company. Bravo!
Thanks for bringing out this jem Dick, made me miss our old friend, Phil, may be rest in peace, who would have enjoyed it very much...

We miss Phil
I'm sure him and Pete would have got on very well.

Your dates are frightening.

I have a copy of Pete's original lyrics, dated July 1967 - OMG ....

As I said, I never conciously set out to reflect a time. My idea was to add texture without getting in the way of the song so I'm pleased it worked.

Thanks for the listen and comment.

Hey Dick this is really wonderful and so evocative of the late 60's. Great that you two re connected and bought this song to fruition. The orchestration is excellent and it bought to mind "Days of Future Past" era Moody Blues. Very much enjoyed.

Days of Future Past? I don't think I've heard that since the 60s!

Excellent
I love these "blast from the past" songs. I hadn't come across Pete until hearing this, but will keep an eye out for him. Your orchestration sounds very contemporary to me, bringing a touch of 2019 to the song of '67.
Cool post Dick.
Cheers from Oz,

A very distant past!

I think the song is a fairly recent recording but it was written 52 years ago (we're all feeling old these days)

Yes, watch out for Pete. I'm not sure you're likely to just run into him as he's a little way from you in Mittagong but I know he plays concerts in various places.

He lists his events here but he doesn't appear to have at the moment.

Good choice of material Dick...
sounds as though this song was written specifically for you!

Beautifully sung, played, and produced... almost ethereal. (I'm a sucker for this type of folk music...)

Three thumbs up my friend!

BRAVO!!!

Ha! It wasn't written for me but it was chosen from the hundreds of Pete's songs for me ;)

Thanks for the ethereal comment as that's how I heard it.

Thanks again
