Chasing Sundown

Description
A friend of mine - Mary Foster - who is an amazingly talented local artist and one of my favorite people in the world, has been taking beautiful photos of sunsets over the local lake. One day, she posted on Facebook she had been out "chasing sundown" and that phrase just stuck with me. It was not only the imagery of her photos that went along with it, but my memories of times going to the same spots she photographs my entire life.

As a kid, I'd hop in the truck with my Dad and we'd do our own sundown chasing at the lake or over in the Delta. Many years later, when I moved back home, I'd leave work, get my father's old truck and the dog and head out to the lake just in time to watch the sun start to sink over the horizon.

It seems like I've been chasing sundown my entire life. Read whatever into that you'd like.

The idea for this tune came about months ago and it went through a lot of permutations, getting more and more convoluted as time went by. Eventually, I stripped away about 50 percent of the lyrics and 75 percent of the chords and was left with something I'm extremely happy with. I managed to get the music and lyrics pretty close to what I was feeling.

The photo above, which is also on my artist's page, is my dog Molly at the spot that's the setting for the song. I like to think it was one of her favorite places too.

Hope you enjoy.

Chasing Sundown

G/D(omit 5)/Am7 x3
F/E7 (omit 3,5)

In the hazy days of summer
when this town seems much too small
my daddy’s old pickup is waiting
the road rolls on before me
I hear that call

The dog she knows the time is coming
when the wind will call her name
flying free with her head out of the window
that look in her eyes
no one can tame

Here we go we’re chasing sundown
leaving our old world behind
trying to find a little peace of mind
we gotta chase that sundown
gotta get away

We drive until we reach the water
and the memories of a time so long ago
I can almost hear tomorrow callin’ me
as I take my time
and ease down to the shore

Watching waves break on field stone
the dog she’s runnin’ on the sand
the minutes grow until time just stands still
and the shadows fall
and sundown fades away

Here we go we’re chasing sundown
leaving our old world behind
trying to find a little peace of mind
we gotta chase that sundown
gotta get away
